Arles (surrounding area) - Van Gogh was so fascinated by Provençal landscapes that he produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time in Arles at the end of the 19th century. Today the city remains famous for its extensive Roman remains, including an impressive amphitheater. In the Musée de l'Arles et de la Provence you can see one of the best collections of Roman sarcophagi to be found anywhere outside Rome itself.
