Description

    Hotels Le Marais - Bastille - Ile Saint-Louis 4th district, zip code : 75004)

This district includes Saint Paul , the Ile Saint Louis (Saint Louis Island) and the Ile de la Cité (City Island).
You will see there so many monuments, the most famous of which being Notre Dame de Paris and its Cloister. The quays of the Seine on the Ile Saint Louis, place of strolling where any bar, restaurant or icecream parlors sell the famous “Berthillon” sorbets popular in the whole world and which cause endless queues on the pavements.

The most beautiful private mansions built at the Renaissance period ,a lot of them having been transformed into Museums: the Picasso museum, the Carnavalet Museum, the Museum of Jewish art. In Saint Paul, on the other side of the rue Saint Antoine which merged into the rue de Rivoli, stands the old Jewish quarter of Paris around the rue des Rosiers, the rue Pavée and of the rue des Ecouffes, which became with the time a district for creators and fashion shops which replaced kosher butcheries, small groceries and ancient stall and booth. It is also known as the “gay” district of Paris with its bars and restaurants.

Going towards the rue des Francs Bourgeois, you will find one of the most beautiful places of Paris: The place des Vosges.
This splendid square place is completely under arcades under which nest painting galleries, second-hand dealers, restaurants including a two stars Michelin honoured restaurant.
Often times, one can listen there professional singers singing operatic arias, jazz or chamber orchestras, or soloists of any kind of instruments, from flutes to trumpet or harps. In one of the corner of the place stands a synagogue, the Temple des Vosges which gives in its back to the synagogue of the rue des Tournelles. On the opposite, a not so well indicated door points to a splendid garden where is held every year a concert during the Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music).

Don’t miss the Victor Hugo museum in one of the corner pf the place. In the center of the place, occupying most of it, lays one superb shaded park where walkers can take a nap on one of the benches. Leaving the place des Vosges on the left towards the rue Saint-Antoine, you will arrive on the place de la Bastille where was standing until the 18th century the prison called Bastille and where only a central column topped by a genie reminds us the past. This place opens on the port de l’Arsenal where are moored pleasure boats and around which a large antiques fair is held once a year.
